EDAVAKA MISSION

The Mar Thoma Church believes that every member of the Church should be a missionary filled with such joy and assurance of salvation as to be Christ’s witness to those who come into contact with them, irrespective of their profession in secular life. Mar Thoma Voluntary Evangelists’ Association (MTVEA), established in 1924, leads these activities within the church and members interested in evangelistic and intercessory activities assemble periodically for prayer and fellowship. The object of this association is that every member of the Church should be a witness to Jesus Christ whatever their occupation may be. Each parish has a unit of MTVEA which is referred to as EDAVAKA MISSION.

The Chembur Edavaka Mission remains actively engaged in all activities of the parish. Bible Study, intercessory prayers, prayerful support to the sick and needy etc. are amongst the activities engaged in. It is closely involved in the activities of Navi Mumbai Centre and Mumbai Diocese of Mar Thoma Church and members participate in various camps and retreats organised from time to time. The Edavaka Mission of the Parish believes that we can be true followers of Christ only if we are compassionate to the needs of our fellow brethren. This, we believe is the essence of Christianity. Various social outreach programs were started during the 80’s. The following mission work presently carried out under the banner of Mar Thoma Welfare Society (MTWS) was initiated by the Edavaka Mission:

1. Balwadi program in Shivaji Nagar
2. Medical services in Shivaji Nagar (now discontinued)
3. Umeed – a safe haven for paediatric cancer patients
4. Support to the Paratwada Mission in Vidarbha

Vicars from time-to-time lead and guide all initiatives of the Edavaka Mission and Chembur Parish has been blessed to have Achens committed to the cause.
